MEET THE QUEENS - Kings Of Neon

        Let's celebrate the Queens!

International Womens Day lands on March 8th. The mission of the day is to promote a gender equal world, raise awareness against bias, take action for equality and celebrate women's achievement.

At Kings Of Neon we wanted to contribute to the cause by celebrating our very own Queens who work day in day put behind the scenes in all parts of the Kings Of Neon brand. We have interviewed the ladies to hear what they have to say about the cause.

        What you do at Kings?
I am the Creative Director here at Kings Of Neon

Why is IWD important to you?
IWD is an extremely important initiative that aims for gender equality. It is deeply sad to this that we still live in world where oppression, and violence is inflicted upon other humans because of their is barbaric. IWD seeks to counteract this by celebrating the political, social, economic and cultural achievements of women and call to action gender equality. Really, IWD is important because the day is a necessary initiative to drive society forward in a more ethical and equal direction.

Who is an empowering female figure in your life and why?
I cannot put my finger on any particular female figure who is empowering as there are so many. It is that moment when you meet a woman and she tell you her story, she expresses her fearlessness, her passion for life, her struggles that she has fought through, her beauty, connection to nature, her role as mother carer, and as a warrior. It's the moment you meet a woman and you see her soul which is so powerful and fierce but soft and compassionate at the same time. These women are empowering and make me feel empowered.

What does being a woman mean to you?
Being a woman to me is about owning yourself and your power. Being a woman is about recognising the boxes that society put's you in and actively choosing to pave your own definition of self. There is a lot of derogatory vocabulary that we are exposed to either first hand or in the media that inherently shapes our belief of self.... being a woman is about choosing your own path.

        What you do at Kings?
I’m a brand spankin’ new addition to the Kings design team

Why is IWD important to you?
I think IWD is super important, as even though the world has come so far in terms of women’s rights in relation to politics & voting, working conditions & pay, and reproductive rights, there is still a long way to go. There are so many systemic ways that women as a whole are still oppressed (and of course this applies even more to minority women), that are so second nature that we’re barely even aware of it.

Who is an empowering female figure in your life and why?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have grown up surrounded by empowering women. As a kid it was my mum and her close friends, then my teachers and tutors, and now even my own friends, who all inspire me every day. I think it’s so important to celebrate the achievements of the women around you, as often women’s successes have been largely omitted from the history books. All the women in my life are empowering, as every single one of us gets up each day & does our best to make the most of what we have been given.

What does being a woman mean to you?
This is a big one! I’m not sure that I have a solid answer to this yet, and I think every woman probably has their own take on it. I guess for me, one part of it is about being aware of male biases in education, media, art and history, and actively seeking out alternative perspectives that align more to my own experience, and sharing the stories and work of women with others around me. As cliché as it sounds, it is in some ways about sisterhood.

        What you do at Kings?
At Kings I do a little bit of everything. Mostly admin work and processing of all the awesome neons.

Why is IWD important to you?
IWD is important to me because it sheds light on issues women still face, and it empowers us to feel stronger.

Who is an empowering female figure in your life and why?
My mum is an empowering female figure as she has always pushed me to do great things and supported me every step of the way.

What does being a woman mean to you?
To me, being a woman means that I am a strong, compassionate and hardworking person.
